Description

The first-generation Dodge Challenger, a member of the MOPAR E-body family, is a rarity on today’s market. The production volumes of Chrysler Corporation’s ‘pony’ cars were not as robust as those from General Motors and Ford. This particular 1973 Challenger is a restored model that started its journey as a ‘Rallye’ 340 but has since been subjected to a host of high-performance enhancements. Its striking exterior showcases a quality re-spray from 2007 in the vibrant Top Banana Yellow shade, which remains in excellent condition, as does the contrasting black vinyl top. A Challenger Rallye 340 hood, eye-catching black paint accents, American Racing alloy wheels reminiscent of the era, and an aggressive stance culminate in a captivating exterior presentation. The interior continues the black theme with refreshed vinyl upholstery. The restoration process included reupholstering the seats and installing new door cards complete with fresh hardware. Noteworthy interior accents consist of wood-grain trim, tinted windows, and an AM/FM stereo system. The original interior was removed to facilitate the installation of Dynamat Xtreme sound insulation beneath the new carpeting, adding to the comfort and acoustic quality of the cabin. Furthermore, the vehicle’s wiring system was overhauled by the owner, who also included a detailed wiring diagram due to some suspect factory MOPAR wiring of the time. The heart of this Challenger, however, is its beefed-up original, matching-number 340ci engine. This powerhouse has been transformed into a 416ci behemoth thanks to a 4340 stroker crank with Wiseco pistons. The engine is equipped with Edelbrock aluminum heads and intake, a solid-lifter Comp cam, roller rockers, a Holley Mighty Demon 850cfm carburetor, an MSD ignition system, and an 8-quart pan. Exhaust gases are efficiently managed via TTi custom headers and a 3” stainless exhaust system. The potent 416 engine is paired with a TCI Super Street automatic transmission, complete with a Super Street torque converter. This setup feeds power to an Auburn Pro Series differential, equipped with 3.91:1 Richmond gears and NHRA-approved axles. The chassis benefits from Caltrac rear springs, Caltrac traction bars, QA1 shocks, a T/A power steering box, and power disc/drum brakes for enhanced handling and stopping power. Recently, this Challenger has undergone an extensive service, involving a complete fluids change and a new battery installation. This old-school Challenger, with its well- built engine and eye-catching appearance, is sure to pique the interest of any classic muscle car enthusiast who seeks a vehicle that was built with a single purpose: to run.
